NORTH DAKOTA ‘YOUTH OF THE YEAR’

BY BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA

For Immediate Release

Kaija Holloway has been named the North Dakota Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The BGCA Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. Now in its 74th year, the Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures. As the 2021 North Dakota Youth of the Year, Kaija will serve as an ambassador for all teens in the state, receive a $2,500 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and will go on to contend for the regional Youth of the Year in June and ultimately the national title.

As President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Red River Valley Keystone Club, Kaija is responsible for planning interest-based activities and community service opportunities for our Club teens. With a focus on making a positive impact in our community, Kaija’s leadership guided the Club to organize a winter clothing and food drive benefitting non-profit the New Life Center.

Kaija aspires to be a self-employed entrepreneur like her mother, who owns and operates several local businesses. Her post-graduation goal is to pursue a career in interior design.

“We are incredibly proud of Kaija and all the Youth of the Year nominees,” said Jim Clark, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “Being named Youth of the Year is a lifelong honor. As the North Dakota Youth of the Year, Kaija will serve as a spokesperson for Boys & Girls Clubs kids across the state who need more role models that they can admire and emulate.”

'Walk With Us' Store

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State men’s basketball program unveiled its ‘Walk With Us’ campaign Friday, Jan. 8, in conjunction with its first home game of the season. The slogan was developed by the Bison student-athletes to promote unity, encourage conversations, and spark positive change.

“Our ‘Walk With Us’ shirts are a representation of our team using our platform to address the social injustices in our country,” said NDSU head men’s basketball coach David Richman. “As a Bison Family, we feel called and driven to do our part to bring awareness to the situation. Please join us as we work to do the ‘next right thing’ and bring people together.”

The campaign is an effort to reduce racism and social injustice by promoting healthy conversation, bringing people together, and making a personal, local impact.

The Bison will wear the ‘Walk With Us’ shirts on campus, in the community, and during games for the remainder of the season. Shirts are available to the public and on sale now in a variety of styles at https://ndsu-walkwithus.itemorder.com/ through the end of January.

With an assist in production from local promotional agency GoPromo, proceeds from the shirt sales go directly to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Red River Valley – a decision that was made by the team to affect local change and make a positive impact in the Fargo-Moorhead community.

“We were delighted our non-profit was selected to receive the ‘Walk with Us’ shirt proceeds,” said Robin Nelson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Red River Valley. “The men’s basketball team’s vision for social justice and bringing people together aligns with the Boys & Girls Clubs commitment making sure our Clubs, kids, families and communities thrive in the face of adversity.”

“Our Clubs come from a place of hope, and we are committed to providing equity for all youth that we serve, and to create safe and inclusive spaces for young people,” Nelson said. “We live in a wonderful and diverse community that makes both our children and each other a priority.”

“We want to use our platform to spread awareness on the issues that matter,” said Bison junior Tyree Eady. “At the end of the day, we play basketball. Basketball is just a sport. But this applies to everybody, and this is what really matters.”
